The Dangote Refinery, located in Nigeria's commercial hub, has commenced production, making it the world's largest single-train refinery.
The facility, initiated by Aliko Dangote, started operations on Friday after receiving a delivery of six million barrels of crude supply. Originally slated for June 2023, the refinery aims to alleviate Nigeria's reliance on fuel imports and could be a significant boost to the country's economy.
The initial focus is on producing diesel and aviation fuel before expanding to petrol output. With a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, the refinery is positioned to meet Nigeria's refined product requirements and generate surpluses for export.
Situated in the Lekki Free Zone near Lagos, the project incurred an estimated cost of $19 billion. In tandem, President Bola Tinubu's economic reforms, including ending the fuel subsidy and floating the naira, are underway to attract foreign investment and foster long-term growth.
The Port Harcourt refinery is also anticipated to commence production as the Dangote refinery begins operations.
