 How Ikot Ekpene People Celebrated Their Day At The Ibom Christmas Park



As part of activities to mark the yuletide season in Akwa Ibom State, different local government areas have been showcasing their cultural heritage at the Ibom Christmas Park located at Udoma Avenue, Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Capital.


Yesterday 14th, December, which was Ikot Ekpene Day at the Park, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ikot Ekpene, Hon. (Sir) John Cleton Etim, in company of his Wife, led a cross section of Stakeholders, Members of the Traditional Rulers Council, Women, Youths and various cultural groups, to display the Raffia City cultural heritage and tradition at the Village Square, Ibom Christmas Park.


Declaring the event open, Hon. John Cleton Etim, acknowledged the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, for reigniting in the consciousness of the people, the need to embrace, celebrate and be proud of their unique cultural identity.


He noted that our forbears left no stone unturned in the promotion of their cultural heritage while alive, noting that this had contributed immensely in strengthening and uniting the State. 


He further appreciated the Stakeholders, Women, Traditional Rulers, Youths and other guest for coming out to witness Ikot Ekpene Day celebration at the Park.


Others who spoke at the event were the Commissioner for Manpower Planning, Elder Aniefiok Nkom, the State House of Assembly Member Representing Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara State Constituency, Hon. (Elder) Jerry Otu, the Chairman Ibom Power Company, Engr. Etido Inyang, the immediate past Chairman of Ikot Ekpene, Rt. Hon. (Obong) Unyime Etim, the Paramount Ruler of Ikot Ekpene, HRH. Okuku Okon Udo Ukut, the PDP Chapter Chairman, Elder Uduak Ekene, the Senatorial District Woman Leader, Obongawan Abigail Akpan. In their various speeches, they applauded Governor Umo Eno for creating a platform for the people of the State to celebrate their diverse culture which, they observed would further strengthen the bond of unity existing in the State, adding that this would go along way in boosting tourism in the State.


Highlight of the event were carnival float by Elders, Women and Youths from Ikot Ekpene, cultural display by different cultural groups that were in attendance including Ekpo, Abang, Abre, introduction and presentation of different cuisines that can be found in Ikot Ekpene.


Also a group of foreign tourists who watched the cultural display by the Ikot-Ekpene people, were conducted round the various cultural stand of the Ikot-Ekpene people at the park by TC Chairman.


It was indeed a colorful outing.
